About this artwork
The textural quality of this rug was created through embroidery stitches that form pile on the surface. This type of rug is a predecessor of the popular hooked rugs of the 19th century, which utilized a labor saving rug hooking tool and strips of fabric to create a textile that was the same on the front and back.
