About this artwork
Michael Wolgemut directed a busy workshop in Nuremberg that turned out numerous paintings, copious book illustrations, and master painters. The Treasury (Schatzbehalter) included almost a hundred full-page woodcuts with minimal repetition. The blocks were likely cut in-house under Wolgemut’s supervision. The text and images juxtaposed devotional scenarios, sometimes in curious order. This image contrasts the seventh plague of Egypt (hailstones intermixed with fire) with the flagellation of Christ. Both sides are thickly, garishly painted, especially in the orange-red areas denoting shooting flames and gushing blood.
