About this artwork
William Hunter’s work participates in the revival of wood turning sparked by artists such as James Prestini. Here, Hunter illustrated the method of lathe-turning at its finest through the densely packed, carved flutes of the bowl’s form, which was inspired by spiral ornamentation on decorative turnings. Ancient Flutes, like many of his works, was inspired by wind-sculpted sands, water ripples, and river currents in his native California. Hunter’s work addresses the interest in exploring both movement and nature through form.
