About this artwork

This early drawing shows Bontecou experimenting with many of the menacing motifs that dominate her later sculptures and prints. Black holes, futuristic aircraft (segmented like an insect’s scales), gas masks, weaponry, and cosmic storms cover its broad surface. Bontecou used drawing both as an end in itself as well as a way to explore ideas for other media.
