About this artwork
Published between 1984 and 2005, Emigre magazine combined critical writing on design with innovative typography and layout. The publication challenged the status quo in the field by advocating for experimentation.
This poster features test prints of the cover design for the 26th issue of Emigre. Designed by Chicago-based graphic designer Rick Valicenti, it features a striking image of a flame, which references the issue’s title, All Fired Up. In an interview included inside, Valicenti discusses the importance for graphic designers to work on projects that benefit society and are not purely commercial. He also developed a set of proposals for a new logo for the magazine. The fractured and layered iterations of the letter E contrast—or challenge—the magazine’s preexisting logo.
