About this artwork

This collectively produced broadside pamphlet was one of the first calavera sheets published by the Taller de Gráfica Popular for the Day of the Dead, drawing on the dark humor, chaotic energy, and satirical edge of the tradition popularized by Posada. The group’s sympathies on both local and international issues are made clear. On the cover, the popular classes fend off monopolistic and rent-gouging calaveras while the back page celebrates a new labor confederation (CTM) and denounces the Munich accords and the partition of Czechoslovakia as a vampiric alliance of Hitler and Mussolini aided by the French and British prime ministers.
