About this artwork
In Hieronymus Bosch’s antic vision of the world, appearances were often deceiving. Here Saint Martin’s pious act of dividing his cloak to clothe a naked beggar takes place within a chaotic panorama of beggars of all types—both those genuinely afflicted by deprivation and disease and mere charlatans.
