Julie Simek

Julie Simek is a conservator of paintings, specializing in European Old Master paintings. In 2001 she received a Masters in Art and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Art Conservation from Buffalo State College. Julie has over 20 years of experience at the Art Institute, including internships, a Mellon Fellowship in Paintings Conservation, and time spent as a contract conservator, where she focused on the Ayala Altarpiece. In 2017, she joined the permanent staff of Conservation and Science. In addition to the Ayala Altarpiece, notable projects at the Art Institute include a carved and painted wooden cabinet by Paul Gauguin and Emile Bernard, paintings by John Singer Sargent, and research and treatment of Vincent Van Gogh’s, Fishing in Spring.
