Cauleen Smith

On Sun Ra’s 1979 album Sleeping Beauty, a chorus sings “Love and life interested me so I dared to knock at the door of the cosmos.”

Explore Sun Ra’s lasting legacy with a viewing of artist Cauleen Smith’s short video Space is the Place (A March for Sun Ra) (2011). In Space is the Place, Smith captures the spontaneous performance of the Rich South High School marching band playing Sun Ra’s eponymous 1972 composition in Chicago’s Chinatown Square. The viewing will be followed by a conversation facilitated by educator Sam Ramos.
